Constitution Square is a symbolic place, a panoramic platform overlooking the Pétrusse valley at the southern end of the historic city. Located at the limit of a UNESCO area, the square was created on the Beck bastion, one of the emblematic places in the center of Luxembourg City.
The project aims to clarify square’s geometry which is currently defined by the placement of the bastion. The project also aims to introduce a large cluster of diverse and colorful tree species to frame the statue of Gaelle Fra.
The square’s central area is designed as slightly raised to amplify the belvedere status of the public space. The project reinforces the pedestrian connections between the square and the historic city-centre by integrating it into the city’s existing open space network, and reducing the width of the street. In parallel, connections between the city to the Pétrusse valley via Constitution Square are enhanced through the integration of a vertical connection (in the form of a lift) within the bastion.
The design proposal is both contemporary and timeless, revealing and celebrating the founding historical elements of the square and its remarkable geography, while also looking to the future, particularly when the environment is a priority.
