Djao-Rakitine Team: Irène Djao-Rakitine, Amélia Chevée, Jitka BenesovaIt was asked to test the implementation of new national design standards new generations of town and cities across Russia in a pilot project and apply various new housing types to the site. To develop this national standards, Strelka KB worked with DOM. RF (formerly the Federal Agency for Housing Mortgage Lending). This strategy is now applied to this project.Saratov, a city with a population of 840,000, locates on the banks of the Volga River in southwestern Russia, 90 minutes by plane from Moscow. More than the quatre of the country population lives in cities of similar size and urban situation. The purpose is for the Saratov project to be a prime example of successful urban development throughout the country. This project helps to establish spatial, social and economic principles that can be replicated across Russia.The masterplan, the urban form, takes advantage of the direct relataion to the geography of the site and its open spaces typologies including a strong approach to enhance biodiversity, diverse vegetation atmospheres and pedestrian and cyclist connexions. Forests, lakes and other waterways promote a new lifestyle near the countryside. The central backbone is a series of parks, an ecological corridor running east-west and connecting the different neighbourhoods of the site through a public promenade which character varies along the way, from the Theme Park and the city centre to the Heath Park, the higher point of the site which offers views across the wider landscape.Along the northern edge, within the «Sanitary Zone», is suggested a Productive Landscape. The southern edge is characterised by an existing woodland within a secondary valley. We suggest to protect this area and designate it as a Nature Reserve. The biodiversity of the reserve is enhanced by the addition of wetlands.The system would be connected to the development through a swale system developed along most of the streets and especially along the «Parkways». The Parkways cross the site in a north-south direction providing long views across the landscape.Local squares are evenly spread out across the town to provide a common ground to each neighbourhood. These squares include playgrounds and sport fields, sometimes associated with local schools. They’re also a place for people to organise community events.More projects
