Along Smolensky Boulevard in Moscow (within what is called the “garden ring”), the proposed terrace garden provides an open space addressing both the busy streetscape of the boulevard and the quieter open space around the surrounding residential tower block.
The northern part of the terrace is conceived as a garden plaza, opening out to the public footpath through generous steps, which can be used as a seating area. This plaza is planted with blooming trees and offers a recreational area that includes ping-pong tables, benches, tables and chairs to rest and play chess.
The southern zone, the garden playground, is more enclosed and sheltered from the boulevard, and includes more diverse planting. Dedicated to children, the garden playground includes swings and slides.
The garden plaza and garden playground are both connected by a series of beech hedges defining the different spaces. A running track designed in parallel to the residential building, highlights the building’s length.
As part of the Garden Ring project, Terrace Garden was awarded by European Prize for Urban Public Space
