Djao-Rakitine Team: Irène Djao-Rakitine, Amélia ChevéeThe site is a former industrial land, previously used for the zinc and brass industry. Only the 80-meter-high chimney remains today. The chimney is renovated and integrated as a landmark as part of the new industrial district for the city of Stolberg for which we have developed an innovative, iconic and playful masterplan.
The masterplan’s funding principles are based on 3 major aspects:
- A strong urban connection to the surrounding neighbourhood with a clear east-west axis also linking the Industrial Park ZINCOLI-Gelände to the cultural quarter including the chimney and the Zinkhütter Hof museum.
- A synergy between the new economic activities of the industrial park and the cultural quarter, forging an innovative and specific project for the city and the wider area based on the local identity and industrial history of Stolberg.
- A strong reference to the historic Stolberger zinc industry with the masterplan’s yard configuration creating a centrality for the city, workers, visitors, and inhabitants of the area. A place for events, a place to meet and exchange. A square defined by the iconic Zincoli chimney highlighted and revealed by a major artwork. The central lawn has a specific topography, visitors and workers can use it to experience the artwork from different viewpoints but also as a playground or as a place to rest and sit.More projects
